Cagliari FC History

Cagliari Calcio was initially founded in 1920 and the club is based in Sardinia, west of the Italian Peninsula.

Only in the 1969/70 season were Cagliari crowned champions of Italy for the first time ever. This came one year after they had ended runners-up to AS Roma in the Coppa Italia.

There has been little to celebrate on a European scale, with very limited appearances in UEFA competitions. Cagliari did however reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup (precursor to the Europa League) in 1994, losing out to domestic rivals Inter Milan.

Cagliari Calcio Players

There have been a host of well-known players who have represented the Rossoblù. These are just a few of the most popular individuals who have worn the colours of Cagliari:

  • Ex-Italy forward Gianfranco Zola spent the final two years of his playing career in Sardinia, having spent seven years at English Premier League side Chelsea. Zola would later become Cagliari manager in December 2014, though he lasted only three months in the job.

  • Nicolò Barella developed in the Cagliari youth system, earning his senior debut in January 2015 prior to his 18th birthday. Barella has since gone on to play more than 50 times for Italy while also fulfilling an integral role in the Inter Milan midfield.

  • Veteran defender Diego Godín joined Cagliari in 2020 following spells with Atletico Madrid & Inter Milan. The 161-cap Uruguay international enjoyed two seasons at the Italian side before moving to South America.

  • Former Belgium midfielder Radja Nainggolan made 188 outings across multiple stints at Cagliari, on either side of his time spent at AS Roma & Inter.

Cagliari Stadium

Since 2017 Cagliari have been based at the Unipol Domus, intitially known as the Sardegna Arena. This is one of the smallest stadiums in the Italian top flight, with a 16,416 capacity.

Cagliari previously played their home matches at Stadio Sant'Elia from 1970-2017.
