This competition is the primary knockout tournament in Scottish football, often considered Scotland's equivalent of the FA Cup.
The First Round comprises of 60 clubs from the lower leagues of the Scottish football pyramid, with Championship sides only entering at the Third Round. Premiership teams join in at the Fourth Round, usually in January, at which point 32 competitors remain in the Scottish Cup.
All ties are contested over a single leg, with replays only used in the preliminary rounds as of the 2022/23 season. Member clubs of the Scottish FA voted in favour of scrapping replays from the First Round onwards, with matches to be decided by extra-time and penalties if necessary.
This competition first ran in the 1873/74 season, with Queen's Park capturing the trophy in each of the first three editions of the tournament. 2,500 people attended the inaugural Scottish Cup final at the old Hampden Park. Queen's Park ran out 2-0 winners over Clydesdale.
Celtic FC won the Scottish Cup for the first time in 1892, and Rangers matched this feat two years later. These clubs have gone on to become the two most decorated in the history of this famous tournament.
The Scottish Cup final is typically held at Hampden Park, the venue used for home games of the Scotland national team. However, a handful of finals have previously been staged at Celtic Park or Ibrox Stadium.
No matter the venue, or the opponents, you can be sure that supporters of both teams involved in the Scottish Cup final will be buzzing come match day.
Celtic FC won the Scottish Cup for a record-extending 42nd time in 2024, moving eight clear of bitter rivals Rangers. One of these two teams were the winners of the Scottish Cup 10 seasons out of 11 from 1998/99 to the 2008/09 campaign. Rangers claimed their 34th title in 2022, defeating Hearts in the final at Hampden Park.
Queen's Park are the next most successful team in this competition, with 10 titles, though the Glasgow-based club hasn't lifted the famous trophy since 1893.
Aberdeen became champions of the Scottish Cup four times in the 1980s, under the management of Alex Ferguson, with only two successes in the tournament prior to his appointment by the club.
Winners of the Scottish Cup in recent seasons include Celtic and Rangers, the two most successful teams in the history of this competition. St Johnstone captured this trophy for the second time in 2021.
Hearts won an eighth Scottish Cup in 2012, and Hibernian became three-time winners of this title in 2016.
