Colombia vs Costa Rica History
Colombia first played in this competition back in 1945. Los Cafeteros reached the final in 1975, in what was the first edition following the rebranding from the South American Championship to Copa America. Colombia would have to settle for second place as Peru ran out 1-0 winners.
The Colombians reached the semi-finals several times before finally capturing a maiden Copa America title in 2001. Hosting the tournament, Los Cafeteros didn't concede a single goal in six matches, defeating Mexico 1-0 in the final held at Estadio El Campín in Bogotá with an estimated 47,000 in attendance.
Costa Rica's first appearance at the Copa America finals came in 1997. Los Ticos were knocked out at the group stage having failed to win any of their three games. The Central American nation reached the quarter-finals at Copa America 2004 but would lose out to none other than Colombia.
Costa Rica also played at Copa America in 2011 as well as at the centenary edition in 2016, but failed to progress from the group stage on either occasion. Both times were Los Ticos grouped together with Colombia.
Colombia vs Costa Rica Head-to-Head
The first time these nations met at Copa America was in 1997, in the group stage, as the Colombians recorded a comfortable 4-1 win. The teams collided again at the 2004 tournament, with Colombia the Copa America holders at the time. The reigning champions claimed a 2-0 victory over Costa Rica in the quarter-finals but ultimately crashed out to Argentina the following round.
These teams would also share a group at Copa America 2011 and again at the centenary edition five years later. Costa Rica beat Colombia at the tournament for the first time in 2016, as Celso Borges scored the decisive goal in a 3-2 victory at the NRG Stadium in Texas.
