Cypress Hill History

Cypress Hill were formed in 1988 in South Gate, California, and they recorded a demo the following year and signed an initial record deal with Ruffhouse Records.

The group released their self-titled debut album in 1991 and secured moderate success before following that release with their incredibly successful second album, Black Sunday.

The album, released by Columbia Records, went to number one on the US Billboard charts and sold over four million copies in the United States alone. Cypress Hill reached the summit of the charts with a truly trendsetting hip-hop group.

The record included a number of hit singles, including Insane in the Brain When the Shit Goes Down, I Ain't Goin' Out Like That and Lick a Shot. It would go on to inspire artists in the genre and made them hip hop's biggest group at the time. Indeed, Cypress Hill soundtracked much of the early 1990s, and as a live outfit, they always deliver the goods, hence the incredible interest in seeing them perform live and in person.

The album was loved by critics and audiences alike and put them well and truly on the mainstream map and it was followed by Cypress Hill III: Temples of Boom, which was another commercial success, selling over a million copies in the US.

That record included hit singles Throw Your Set In the Air, Illusions and Boom Biddy Bye Bye.

Cypress Hill IV followed in 1998, and their next release, 2000's Skull & Bones, saw the group break back into the top ten on the US Billboard Albums chart and also performed well across Europe. Stoned Raiders (2001), Till Death, Do Us Part (2004), Rise Up (2010), and Elephants on Acid (2018) all secured a mixture of commercial and/or critical acclaim.

2022 saw Cypress Hill release their tenth studio album, and Back in Black earned glowing reviews and confirmed the group's longevity.

Cypress Hill have sold over 20 million albums worldwide, and among the many accolades they have received are a Billboard Music Award (won in 1992 for Top Rap Song), three Grammy nominations, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame back in 2019.
