Feyenoord’s success in UEFA’s showpiece tournament, or lack thereof for large portions of their history, can be neatly split into the two formats the competition has been run in. During the Eredivisie side’s involvement in the European Cup, the Dutch team proved very effective indeed. In 1970 they triumphed in the competition and won their maiden title, beating Celtic after extra-time to lift the trophy for the first time. They also got to the Quarter-Finals a couple of years later. However, since the rebranding to the UEFA Champions League in the 1990s, things have been very lean indeed. Feyenoord have barely competed since then and getting out of the group stage has proven a mountain they have not been able to climb.
Celtic’s history in the competition is actually quite similar. Under the reign of Jock Stein in the 1960s and early 1970s, the Glasgow side were feared. In 1966/67, they became the first British team to win the European Cup, beating Inter Milan in the final. They reached the final in 1970, losing to Feyenoord and reached the Semi-Finals on a number of occasions. In the UEFA Champions League era, they have got nowhere near the same level of success, indeed, the Bhoys reaching the Round of 16 is about as good as it has gotten in recent seasons.
These two teams famously met in the 1970 European Cup Final in Milan. Celtic were the favourites to succeed and they took the lead through Tommy Gemmell on the half-hour, only for Feyenoord captain Rinus Israel to level two minutes later. The game went to extra time, and in the 117th minute, Swedish forward Ove Kindvall gave the Dutch side a famous win. In 2023/24, they were drawn in the same UEFA Champions League group, and Feyenoord won their home clash 2-0, with Celtic being reduced to nine men by the end of the feisty fixture. A late Gustaf Lagerbielke winner handed the Scottish side a 2-1 win in the return clash.
Of all the players to have represented both clubs, there is none that match the impact made by Swedish international Henrik Larsson made with Feyenoord and Celtic. Larsson moved to De Kuip in 1993, and over the course of his four seasons in the Netherlands, he racked up 43 goals in 151 games before moving to Glasgow. The prolific marksman quickly became a fan favourite and amassed an astonishing 242 goals in 313 games for Celtic, winning countless honours in the process and rose to become the third highest goalscorer for the club ever. He then left to join FC Barcelona in 2004.
