Ireland were one of four founding nations of this competition back in 1883, together with England, Scotland and Wales.
France, meanwhile, entered the tournament for the first time in 1910, thus expanding it to the Five Nations. It wasn’t until 1954 that the French became maiden winners of the Championship and five years later they were outright champions for the first time.
In recent years both these nations have regularly been in the mix to win the Championship.
France claimed the Six Nations crown in 2022, ending a 12-year duck since Les Bleus were last champions of this tournament.
In 2023, Ireland won the Championship for a 23rd time and a fifth since the competition expanded to six teams in 2000. The Irish also won the Triple Crown, having beaten the other three Home Nations (England, Scotland and Wales).

These teams have clashed on more than 100 occasions, with only a handful of those occurring outside this competition.
In 2023, Ireland beat France 32-19 at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, on their way to winning the Championship and Grand Slam honours.
The previous year, Les Bleus had done likewise with a 30-24 victory over the Irish at Stade de France.
