Italy World Cup History

After missing out on the inaugural FIFA World Cup in 1930, Italy hosted and won the second edition of the tournament four years later and then retained the title in 1938. The trophy remained in the hands of the Azzurri throughout World War II, until the next event in 1950.

The Italians waited almost half a century to claim World Cup honours for the third time, finally doing so in 1982. They finished in third place at the 1990 World Cup held on home soil, before ending runners-up to Brazil in 1994.

Italy become four-time winners of the FIFA World Cup in 2006, thanks to a nail-biting win over France on penalties. Since their last triumph, Italy's performances at the World Cup have been incredibly underwhelming with two group-stage exits in 2010 & 2014 followed by failure to qualify for both the 2018 & 2022 tournaments.

Italy Memorable Moments at the World Cup

Of course, the 1982 World Cup Final will live long in the memory of Italy supporters of a certain age. Paolo Rossi opened the scoring as the Azzurri ran out 3-1 winners against West Germany at Estadio Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid.

The Italians returned to the World Cup Final in 1994, but they lost out to Brazil as Roberto Baggio skied his penalty kick in the shootout after the game ended goalless.

Best Italy Players at the World Cup

There is no shortage of world-class footballers who've represented Italy at previous World Cup tournaments, some of them inspirational to their team's success at the showpiece event.

Paolo Rossi scored six goals at the 1982 World Cup and lifted the trophy alongside the likes of Marco Tardelli & Bruno Conti, while goalkeeper and captain Dino Zoff became the oldest player to win the World Cup.

Gianluigi Buffon went to five World Cup tournaments, playing at four of them, and he amassed a record 176 caps for the national team. There have been a number of world-class defenders represent Italy at the World Cup, namely Franco Baresi & Paolo Maldini during the 1980s and 90s, and Giorgio Chiellini & Leonardo Bonucci in more recent times.

There have been a number of respected managers in charge of the Italy national football team at the World Cup, with a few of them successfully guiding the Azzurri to the title.

Enzo Bearzot was the man who inspired Italy to victory in 1982, having reached the semi-finals at the previous edition. Arrigo Sacchi was in the dugout for the 1994 World Cup, though his charges came out second best against Brazil in the Final.

Marcello Lippi achieved in 2006 what Cesare Maldini & Giovanni Trapattoni failed to before him, as the Italians overcame France on penalties in the World Cup Final. Lippi bowed out as a champion but he was later reappointed and led the team at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Cesare Prandelli took Italy to the 2014 World Cup, resulting in a disappointing group-stage exit for the Azzurri.
