Manchester United, as three-time winners of the European Cup/UEFA Champions League, are considered one of the biggest teams in football.

Arguably, their standing in the game should have meant more success at the highest level, and for the decade that followed the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson as manager of the club, they have failed to make a significant impact on the competition.

Their first title came in 1968 following a fine 4-1 win over Benfica at Wembley Stadium, but it would take another thirty years to repeat the feat. Rome-based side Lazio are the visitors for this exciting clash, and they are a side who perhaps should have achieved more in Europe given their size and stature. Up to 2023, the Biancocelesti had just one European title to their name, and that came in the now-defunct UEFA European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1999.

As for the club’s record in the UEFA Champions League, it would be fair to say that they have struggled. In their first venture into the tournament, in 1999/2000, they did incredibly well to negotiate a path through both the two group stage phases to book a place in the Quarter-Finals, where they met Spanish side Valencia.

In the first leg, at the imposing Mestalla, Sven-Goran Eriksson’s side were thumped 5-2, and that rendered the second leg 1-0 win, courtesy of a Juan Sebastian Veron goal, somewhat meaningless.

In each of their next five campaigns in the competition, they failed to get into the knockout phase, a run they corrected in 2020/21, though on that occasion, they were then easily beaten by Bayern Munich in the Round of 16, losing 6-2 on aggregate.

The only occasion these two teams have met up to 2023 came in the 1999 European Super Cup, with Chilean forward Marcelo Salas scoring the only goal of the game in Monaco.

Perhaps the most accomplished star to play for both would have to be Dutch centre-back, Jaap Stam. The combative defender was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson from PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 1998, becoming the most expensive defender ever at the time.

In his first season at Manchester United, he racked up 51 appearances and played a massive role in the club’s treble-winning campaign. He went on to play 127 times for the club, scoring once and winning two more Premier League titles before he left to join Lazio in 2001.

He would go on to move to AC Milan before finishing his career at Ajax.
