Nas Biography

Nasir Jones, aka Nas, was born in September 1973 in Brooklyn, New York and was drawn to music from an early age, learning the trumpet as a child and writing songs.

By 1992, he had been signed by Columbia Records, and his iconic debut album, Illmatic, was released to much critical acclaim in 1994. It reached number 12 on the US Billboard charts and sold over a million and a half copies in the United States alone and also performed well across Europe.

The album spawned several successful singles, with It Ain't Hard to Tell, The World Is Yours, and One Love (featuring Q-Tip) proving to be the most commercially effective. The album instantly put Nas on the map, and his career has blasted off in a big way.

Two years later, Nas took things up a notch with his It Was Written album, which went to the top of the US charts and proved he was not a one-trick pony. He teamed up with a number of artists on this release, including Lauryn Hill, Dr. Dre, Mobb Depp and Foxy Brown.

I Am (1999), Nastradamus (1999), Stillmatic (including the ludicrously addictive One Mic) (2001), God's Son (2002) and Street's People (2004) all delivered the goods. What followed next was a run of three successive number-one hit albums, with Hip Hop Is Dead (2006), Untitled (2008) and Life is Good (2012) all proving monster successes.

His 2012 album Life Is Good, his first in four years, was another chart-topper and included memorable tracks with Mary J. Blige (Reach Out), Rick Ross (Accident Murderers), Anthony Hamilton (World's an Addiction) and Amy Winehouse (Cherry Wine).

2018 saw the release of his eleventh studio album, Nasir, which was produced by Kanye West and was part of his Wyoming Sessions. In 2021, Nas secured his first Grammy win, picking up an award for Best Rap Album for King's Disease; this came after a run of 13 nominations without success. That same year, he released the Hit Boy-produced Magic, another well-received album.

In 2024 he paired up with DJ Premier on Define My Name and Ghostface Killah on Scar Tissue to great effect.
