Parma History

The club was founded in July 1913 as Verdi Foot Ball Club, though within a few months the name was changed to Parma Foot Ball Club. Only in the 1990/91 season did Parma FC play in Serie A for the first time, though the Crociati soon became a prominent force in Italian football.

With Carlo Ancelotti as manager, Parma ended runners-up in the 1996/97 campaign, just 2 points shy of champions Juventus. Parma have won the Coppa Italia no fewer than three times – in 1992, 1999 and 2002.

The club was declared bankrupt in 2015, bringing an end to its six-year stay in Serie A, before it was re-founded as Parma Calcio 1913. Parma were crowned champions of Serie B in 2023/24, earning promotion to Serie A and ending a three-year spell away from the top flight.

The club's most bitter rivals are Reggiana, though there are also tensions with Bologna, with this rivalry known as the Derby dell'Emilia.

Parma Famous Players

A number of well-known players have donned the famous yellow & blue of Parma.

  • Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon started his career at Parma before completing a transfer to Juventus in 2001, for a then-record fee for a goalkeeper of €52m. Buffon returned to his boyhood club in 2021, aged 43 at the time, and made 43 appearances before hanging up his gloves at the end of the 2022/23 season.

  • Argentina striker Hernán Crespo spent four years at Parma from 1996-2000 before going on to play for the likes of Lazio, Inter Milan and Premier League side Chelsea.

  • Gianfranco Zola is another who plied his trade for Parma, making 149 appearances across a three-year stint at the Stadio Ennio Tardini.

  • France international defender Lilian Thuram amassed 228 games as a Parma player from 1996-2001, paving the way for him to join Juventus and later FC Barcelona.

  • Italy's World Cup-winning captain Fabio Cannavaro had also made his name at Parma, playing almost 300 times for the club before signing for Inter Milan and later Real Madrid.

Parma Stadium

Stadio Ennio Tardini opened in 1923 and the facility is named after Ennio Tardini, a former President of Parma. The venue capacity increased to 29,000 seats in 1997, though in 2006 the capacity was reduced to 21,473 for all-seater events.

This is the second-largest stadium in the Emilia-Romagna region, as well as the sixth oldest Italian football ground still in use.
