This tie pits two previous winners of UEFA's premier club competition against one another. PSV Eindhoven were triumphant in 1986/87, as Guus Hiddink's side remarkably defeated Real Madrid in the semi-finals and then SL Benfica in the European Cup final. Since then, however, the Dutch club hasn't fared well in Europe, particularly in the Champions League era.
PSV were a regular fixture in Europe's elite in the late 1990s and early 2000s, but failed to advance from the group stage in each of their first eight seasons playing Champions League football.
