AC Milan History

The club was founded in December 1899, making it one of the oldest professional teams in Italian football still in existence today. The popular Rossoneri earned their nickname due to the club's colours of red and black, which were intentionally selected to inspire fear in the hearts of opponents.

Interestingly enough, one of the most successful Italian football clubs, AC Milan was founded by two Englishmen, expatriates Herbert Kilpin and Alfred Edwards. However, although Englishman formed the club, the Italian mentality was the driving force from the start. Some team members were not happy with the signing of international players to the squad.

The internal rift was so large that it caused the formation of a new club in the city, properly named F.C. Internazionale Milano. This gave birth to one of the oldest and most intense rivalries in football history, making San Siro the epicentre of Derby della Madonnina.

AC Milan enjoyed mild success in the 1950s and 60s, followed later by a genuine golden period lasting from the late 80s into the mid-90s. Spearheaded by the Dutch trio of Ruud Gullit, Marco van Basten and Frank Rijkaard, the Rossoneri won the Scudetto five times and the European Cup / Champions League thrice all in the space of eight years.

Another period of success followed in the 2000s with Carlo Ancelotti as manager of AC Milan. The Italian tactician guided the club to Champions League glory twice more, defeating domestic rivals Juventus in 2003 and then Liverpool in 2007.

League titles have been few and far between for AC Milan this century. Following the triumph under Ancelotti in 2002/03, the Rossoneri didn't win the Italian Serie A again until 2011. After more than a decade without a league title, Milan topped Serie A in the 2021/22 season to be crowned champions of Italy for the 19th time. Stefano Pioli was in charge of this title-winning team.

San Siro (Stadio Giuseppe Meazza)

Home to both resident clubs, the San Siro is located just outside the heart of the city of Milano. The first match at the San Siro was played in September 1926, as Inter defeated AC Milan 6-3 in front of 35,000 spectators.

AC Milan would continue playing at the San Siro until 1941 and resumed its occupancy following the end of WWII. Inter adopted this ground in 1947 and the Milanese rivals have shared the stadium ever since, playing home matches on alternative weekends.

The stadium was named after Giuseppe Meazza in 1980, half a year after the former Italy forward had passed away. Meazza represented both AC Milan and Inter Milan, though he is more fondly remembered by supporters of the latter.

Today the San Siro is one of the most attractive venues in Italy and even across European football, with a capacity above 75,000. During the 2022/23 season there was an average attendance of 72,630 for Inter Milan home matches, slightly more than the 71,880 average for AC Milan home games.

No player, past or present, is more synonymous with AC Milan than Paolo Maldini. The ex-defender made his first-team debut in January 1985 and would spend the best part of 25 years in the same dressing room, amassing more than 900 senior appearances for the Rossoneri.

Maldini had a strong partnership in defence with centre-backs Franco Baresi and Alessandro Costacurta. The former played no fewer than 719 (competitive) matches for AC Milan and is widely regarded as one of the most iconic central defenders in the history of European football.

Other well-known players of yesteryear include the likes of Clarence Seedorf, George Weah, Andriy Shevchenko, Filippo Inzaghi, Alessandro Nesta, and Andrea Pirlo.

Brazilian attacking midfielder Kaka was amidst his prime years during his first spell with the Rossoneri, inspiring his team to Champions League glory while he was presented with the prestigious Ballon d'Or award in 2007. Fellow Brazil icons Ronaldinho and Ronaldo Nazario also represented AC Milan, though not necessarily in the peak of their illustrious careers.

Zlatan Ibrahimović enjoyed two spells with the club, winning the Scudetto in each stint. The ex-Sweden striker scored a combined 93 goals in 163 appearances for the Rossoneri.
