AS Monaco History

The club, under the name Association Sportive de Monaco, was founded in the 1920s and turned professional in 1933. The 1953/54 season was the first in which Monaco took part in the French first division. 10 years later the team had claimed two league titles as well as two Coupe de France crowns, winning a league-cup double in 1963.

The imminent departure of manager Lucien Leduc resulted in Monaco enduring a slump in which the club dropped out of the top flight for a short period of time. Leduc returned as manager in 1976 and he steered Monaco back up to the first division before winning the league title the very next season. His successor, Gérard Banide oversaw a further league triumph in 1982.

Despite frequently competing in international tournaments, the early-to-mid 80s didn't yield much success for AS Monaco. Arsène Wenger was appointed manager in 1987 and the French coach led the team to win the league title in his first season in charge. Wenger remained in the position for seven years, during which time Monaco were serious contenders in French football.

Wenger was the inspiration behind a number of shrewd signings, namely George Weah, Glenn Hoddle and Jürgen Klinsmann. In addition, the likes of Lilian Thuram, Emmanuel Petit and Thierry Henry emerged from the Monaco youth teams to become integral components in the senior team.

Jean Tigana and his successor Claude Puel each guided the team to a league title in 1997 and 2000, respectively. World Cup-winning captain Didier Deschamps took charge of Monaco in 2001 and it was under his tutelage that the club reached the 2003/04 Champions League final. Monaco lost out to José Mourinho's FC Porto though this was still a historic achievement for the Monegasque side.

AS Monaco Today

The club was subject to a takeover by Russian oligarch Dmitry Rybolovlev in December 2011, at which time AS Monaco was in the second tier of the French league system.

After earning promotion to the top flight in 2013, Monaco acquired high-profile players such as Radamel Falcao, James Rodríguez and João Moutinho. Seasoned internationals such as Portugal centre-back Ricardo Carvalho and France left-back Eric Abidal also signed for the Monegasque outfit, and the team subsequently finished 2nd in the 2013/14 season.

A sharp recruitment strategy saw Monaco sign players for considerably low transfer fees before selling them on for significant profit margins. Leonardo Jardim was brought in as manager in 2014 and he went on to lead the club to the Ligue 1 title in 2017, its first top-flight triumph in 17 years.

This particular season also saw Monaco progress to the Champions League semi-finals as the trio of Falcao, Kylian Mbappé and Bernardo Silva were integral to the team's success. Les Rouge et Blanc defeated Pep Guardiola's Manchester City via the away-goal rule in the Round of 16, before overcoming German giants Borussia Dortmund in the quarter-finals. Monaco would ultimately lose out to Juventus in the semis, 4-1 on aggregate.

After going five years without Champions League football, Monaco returned to UEFA's premier club competition for the 2024/25 season.

AS Monaco Famous Football Players

Former France international goalkeeper Jean-Luc Ettori amassed a club-record 754 appearances, having spent the entirety of his 19-year senior career with AS Monaco. Delio Onnis scored a total 223 goals in 278 appearances, making him the club's all-time top goalscorer.

Claude Puel, who served as a midfielder, also played exclusively for Les Rouge et Blanc and he racked up 601 appearances across a 17-year spell, making him the most-capped outfield player in the club's history. Jean Petit is another who spent his entire career at Monaco, and he played 426 times for the first-team.

In 2018 Monaco received an estimated €180m for the transfer of Kylian Mbappé to Paris Saint-Germain, while countryman Thomas Lemar left for Atletico Madrid in a deal worth €70m. Monaco would also earn €80m for French midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni, who switched to Real Madrid in 2022.
