Bayer Leverkusen History

The club was founded in 1904, initially named TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen. In 1999, almost a century after its formation, the club declared its football department a separate entity from the sports club. The football team formally took on the name Bayer 04 Leverkusen Fussball GmbH.

After many years of playing in the lower leagues, Bayer Leverkusen made its first outing in the German top flight (Oberliga) in 1951. The club was not a founding member of the Bundesliga in 1963, and in fact only featured in the reformatted top flight for the first time in 1979.

Leverkusen have remained a permanent fixture in the Bundesliga for more than 40 years, but only managed to clinch league honours for the first time in 2024. Die Werkself had previously ended runners-up on several occasions, including four times in the space of six years in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

The 1999/00 campaign was particularly cruel as Bayer Leverkusen lost out on the Bundesliga title by virtue of an inferior goal difference to Bayern Munich. Two seasons later, the men in black and red missed out by just a single point as Borussia Dortmund were crowned champions of Germany. Additionally, Bayer Leverkusen lost to Real Madrid, 2-1, in the 2001/02 UEFA Champions League final.

In terms of trophy success and past achievements, Bayer Leverkusen don't have all too much to look back on. The club celebrated a first major title in 1988 by winning the UEFA Cup (precursor to the Europa League), with victory over Spanish side RCD Espanyol in the two-legged final. The one blot on their 2023/2024 season was a Europa Cup final loss to Atalanta in the final held at Aviva Stadium.

Leverkusen won the DFB-Pokal in 1993 to hoist a maiden domestic cup. Xabi Alonso also secured the DFB Pokal in 2024, just days after losing the Europa League final, with a 1-0 win over Kaiserslautern.

Since the start of the 21st century, Bayer Leverkusen have finished inside the top four in no fewer than 12 Bundesliga seasons. Having tried and failed to capture the club's first-ever league title, Die Schwarzroten took the Bundesliga by storm during the 2023/24 campaign.

Former Spain midfielder Xabi Alonso was appointed manager of Bayer 04 in October 2022 and subsequently worked wonders in under two years in the role. Leverkusen were in the relegation zone at the time of Alonso's arrival, yet he managed to lift the team up to 6th by the end of the 2022/23 season.

Come the following term Bayer 04 successfully brought an end to Bayern's spell of dominance in the German top flight. Die Werkself were neck-and-neck with Bayern Munich at the halfway stage of the league campaign, before the former claimed a comprehensive 3-0 win over the Bavarians in February 2024. This extended Leverkusen's unbeaten run beyond 30 games in all competitions and moved the team 5 points clear of Bayern atop the Bundesliga table.

Little over two months later Bayer Leverkusen were crowned champions of Germany for the first time ever, sealing the Bundesliga title with a 5-0 thumping of Werder Bremen. Tens of thousands of fans flooded the pitch at the BayArena as Die Werkself secured a maiden league triumph with five games to spare. Bayer 04 went on to remain undefeated throughout the season, becoming the first team to achieve this feat in the Bundesliga.
