Ben Folds Biography

Benjamin Scott Folds was born in Greensboro, North Carolina, in September 1966 and became interested in the piano at the tender age of nine. In 1994 he founded the Ben Folds Five, an acclaimed band that produced a succession of classic albums.

Their debut album, Ben Folds Five, was released in August 1995 and was a moderate success, and the follow-up, Whatever and Ever Amen, proved far more successful and was a hit on both the US and UK Album charts.

The band's final studio album came out in 2012 with The Sound of the Life of the Mind being their first album release in over a decade and was once again well received by critics and fans alike.

Ben Folds released his debut solo album in 2001, Rockin' the Suburbs, charting well across the world, and his follow-up, in 2005, with Songs for Silverman, rose to number 13 on the US Billboard charts and was his biggest hit to date.

Three years later, Way to Normal came out and built on that success, and his latest album, 2023's What Matters Most, is a glorious mix of what we like best about Ben Folds's simple, understated output, often thought-provoking and emotive.

That record was his first release in eight years and came off the back of a number of special projects that Ben Folds has concentrated on in the intervening period.

Aside from his album releases, Ben Folds has also dabbled in cinematic work, providing songs for a number of films, including The Banger Sisters, I Am Sam and How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
