Regina Spektor Biography

Regina Spektor was born in Moscow in February 1980, and her family moved to the Bronx in New York in 1989. Initially, classical music most interested Regina Spektor, but she grew to develop a real interest in hip-hop, rock, and punk.

She studied classical piano until the age of 17 and is a talented multi-instrumentalist. She often sings in other languages, occasionally springing words in Latin, Russian or French into her songs; this is a throwback to her listening to songs in English as a youngster without fully understanding the lyrics.

In 2001, she released her debut album, 11:11, which failed to make much of an impression on the mainstream charts. Songs, her second album, was released in 2002, and it was her third album, Soviet Kitsch, which saw her finally start to break onto the scene.

Regina Spektor worked with The Strokes on her debut single, Modern Girls & Old Fashioned Men, and her fourth album, Begin to Hope, broke onto the charts in the US and the UK, as well as many other territories and sold over one million copies.

Tracks On the Radio, Fidelity, Hotel Song and Samson all performed well, and her next album, Far (2009), reached number three on the US Billboard Albums chart.

What We Saw from the Cheap Seats (2012), Remember Us to Life (2016), and Home, Before and After (2022) followed, and all earned commercial and critical acclaim and cemented her on the anti-folk and alternative rock scene.

As well as selling millions of records, Regina Spektor has earned plaudits at awards ceremonies on many occasions. In 2014, she was nominated for her first Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media 2014, and she has also earned Shortlist Music Prize and MTV Video Music Awards nominations over the years.
