Mitski Biography

Mituski Miyawki, aka Mitski, was born in Mie Prefecture, Japan, in September 1990. Due to her father's position in the United States Department of State, she lived all over the world as a child, including in Turkey, Malaysia, China, the Czech Republic, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Having joined Hunter College to study film, Mitski moved her attention to music with great effect. She self-released her debut album, Lush, in 2012 and followed that up with Retired from Sad, New Career in Business (2013) and had her label debut with Bury Me at Makeout Creek in 2014. This was the first of her albums to chart, doing so in New Zealand.

She signed to Dead Oceans ahead of the release of Puberty 2, which was another moderate success before her breakout album, Be the Cowboy, earned her a first US Billboard Album Charts success in 2018. The record effectively launched Mitski onto a new plain, bringing her to a larger, more mainstream audience.

The indie star saw the single Washing Machine Heart secure much-needed commercial airplay and then saw her next album, Laurel Hell, perform far better than her previous five full-length albums, reaching number five in the US and breaking into the top ten around the world, including in the UK, Australia and Germany. In 2022, Mitski appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live and played her track, Stay Soft.

Mitski released her seventh album in 2023, The Land is Inhostpitable and So Are We, perhaps her most ambitious release to date. Among the stunningly brilliant tracks on the album are Bug Like an Angel, Buffalo Replaced, Heaven, and the successful single My Love Mine All Mine. The record secured great reviews from critics and has been adoringly received by her loyal fanbase.
