Clairo Biography

Claire Elizabeth Cottrill was born in Atlanta, Georgia, in August 1998, and she moved into the music world at a very early age. She took to social media and began sharing her early compositions, recording covers of tracks via her MacBook, the first of which apparently was a Maroon 5 song.

She initially recorded under the name Claire Cottrill before developing her alias, Clairo. She first moved into the mainstream consciousness when the video for her track Pretty Girl went viral in 2017, helping her to garner some much-needed exposure. She also released the addictively popular single Flaming Hot Cheetos in the same year.

The success of Pretty Girl led to a bidding war to sign Clairo, with Capitol, Columbia, and RCA all keenly interested. She brought her live show to bigger and grander venues as a result of her burgeoning success with performances at the celebrated Bowery Ballroom in New York as well as opening for Dua Lipa on some dates. In 2019 she also performed at Coachella, helping to further expand her fanbase.

Her debut album, released by the Fader Label, was released in 2019 and Immunity broke into the US Billboard Album Charts and reached 51 and also did well on the Alternative Chart. Successful singles from the album include Bags, Closer to You and Sofia. In the same year, she featured on the Wallows track, Are You Bored Yet, which went three times platinum in the United States.

In 2024, Clairo released her third studio album, Charm, which was supported by successful tour dates played to packed venues.

Though still very much in the infancy of what is sure to be a very successful career, Clairo has already achieved a great deal and has plenty of accolades to prove it. These include three awards handed to her at the Boston Music Awards (across 2018 and 2019) and placing fifth on BBC Radio 1's Hottest Record of the Year for her song Bags. In 2020, she won the NME Award for Best New Act in the World.

Among Clairo's many cited influences are acts as diverse as Al Green, Cocteau Twins, The The, and Public Image Ltd. She has also stated that Wincing the Night Away, the third album from indie rock gods The Shins, was the impetus for her own musical career.
