John Mayer Biography

John Mayer was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1977 and started playing guitar at an early age. His obsessive mastering of the instrument helped make him the artist that he is today. He took to playing in bars while still in high school, and in 1999, he released his first EP titled Inside Wants Out, which charted at 22 on the US Billboard charts.

John Mayer released his first studio release in 2001 on Columbia Records, with his debut album Room for Squares proving a huge hit, selling over four million copies in the United States and breaking into the top ten. The album included hit singles No Such Thing and Your Body is a Wonderland.

2003 saw John Mayer release his first number-one album, Heavier Things topping the charts in the US and performing well worldwide. 2005 saw him form the John Mayer Trio with Pino Palladino and Steve Jordan with their live album Try doing very well in terms of critical success.

After seeing his career skyrocket, John Mayer made the conscious decision to get back to basics and looked to work with some of his guitar heroes, including the great Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy and B.B. King.

In 2006 John Mayer's third solo studio album Continuum proved a hugely successful release, spawning hit singles Waiting on the World to Change, Slow Dancing In a Burning Room, Gravity, Dreaming with a Broken Heart and Say. Battle Studies proved another hit, with Heartbreak Warfare becoming one of his most successful singles to date.

2008's Where the Light Is was another live album success with the single Free Fallin, the cover of the Tom Petty classic, charting.

In 2021 John Mayer released his eighth studio album and Sob Rock was a top ten hit in the US and the UK and proved that interest in the talented musician was as high as ever, and that has certainly been reflected in his ability to sell tickets for any concert tour he puts on, whether that be a small venue in London or a stadium in the US. The album saw singles Last Train Home and Wild Blue go to number one on the US Adult Alternative Airplay charts while New Light also performed well.
