German Cup History and Information

The DFB-Pokal is the premier knockout competition in Germany, where Bundesliga heavyweights often come up against sides from lower-ranked divisions. It is a prestigious cup and one that every team, manager, and player would love to get their hands on.

Originally called the Tschammerpokal, the maiden edition of the German Cup took place in 1935 and the inaugural champions were 1. FC Nürnberg.

Nowadays the knockout tournament sees 64 teams enter at the first round, with the winners of all 32 ties progressing to the next round. The third round represents the last-16 stage, followed by the quarter-finals, semi-finals and ultimately the championship match.

The DFB-Pokal final has taken place at the Olympiastadion Berlin every year since 1985.
