Dream Theater History

Dream Theater were formed in 1985 by guitarist John Petrucci, bassist John Myung and drummer Mike Portnoy. Initially, the trio honed their act by playing Rush and Iron Maiden covers, and they brought in Kevin Moore on keyboards and Chris Collins on lead vocals before he was replaced by Charlie Dominici (albeit briefly).

The band's debut album, When Dream and Day Unite, was released in 1989 and was a moderate success with fans and critics. This was followed by Images and Words in 1992, which went on to sell well in the United States and started to gain the band exposure. That album included successful singles Pull Me Under and Another Day.

By 1991, James LaBrie had joined as lead vocalist, and Jordan Rudess would go on to replace Kevin Moore on keyboards.

Awake, the band's third album, helped them gain more of a foothold in the US and across Europe.

Falling into Infinity (1997), which includes the popular single Peruvian Skies, Metropolis Pt.2: Scenes from a Memory (1999), Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (2002), Train of Thought (2003), and Octavarium (2005) were all commercially successful, and the Dream Theater's prolific output helped earn rave reviews and expand its fanbase.

2007's Systemic Chaos was the band's most successful to date and there then followed a period of consistent success. Black Clouds & Silver Linings (2009), A Dramatic Turn of Events (2011), and their self-titled twelfth album released in 2013 were all top ten hits on the US Billboard Albums chart.

In 2021, Dream Theater released their fifteenth album, A View from the Top of the World, and it was another monumental success, especially in Japan.

Dream Theater have sold millions of albums over the course of their lengthy history, and have also won a host of awards. Having earned a number of Grammy nominations over the years, they won their first Grammy Award in 2022 for Best Metal Performance for the song The Alien.
