Gene Simmons Biography

Chaim Witz, aka Gene Simmons, was born in August 1949 in Haifa, Israel, and he formed Kiss (originally Wicked Lester) in 1973 with Paul Stanley, Peter Criss and Ace Frehley. Over the course of a 40-year run, the band sold over 75 million records worldwide.

At the height of their powers, Kiss was one of the biggest bands on the planet and an astonishingly successful live act. The group continues to be huge thanks to great merchandising efforts, and Kiss memorabilia remains popular.

Gene Simmons's creation of The Demon involved the bass-playing member of Kiss fire breathing and blood spitting as part of an elaborate performance, which was very much in keeping with the group's over-the-top nature.

Among Kiss's most famous tracks were the iconic songs I Was Made for Lovin' You, Crazy Crazy Nights, Rock and Roll All Nite, Detroit Rock City, Hard Luck Woman, Sure Know Something and Beth. In 2014, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Having been on the road pretty much non-stop from 1973 to 2023, the group decided to call it a day, and it's worth noting that they went out on a high. Their last tour, titled the End of the Road Tour, ran from January 2019 to December 2023 and saw them play 250 dates across the world, coming to a suitable climax with back-to-back shows at New York's famed Madison Square Garden.

Gene Simmons released his debut solo album in 1978. His self-titled debut performed well, selling over a million copies in the United States alone, and incredibly, it would take over 25 years for a second album to be released.

In 2004 he released Asshole, which charted well, and saw him play a number of covers, including his unique version of Prodigy's Firestarter, with former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Dave Navarro also performing on the track.

Watching the Gene Simmons Band perform live is the closest fans can get to seeing Kiss in action, and they also get to enjoy the classics from his solo career. The best chance fans have to get to see the great man in action is to take advantage of the amazing deals available via SeatPick sooner rather than later.

As a stage performer, Gene Simmons frequently pushed the envelope and crossed boundaries, and that element of unpredictability is very much par for the course and part of the reason fans flock to his shows, both as a solo artist and during his time in Kiss.
