Hungary vs England History
England remains one of the leading teams in international football, despite having never been crowned champions of Europe. The Three Lions are generally considered one of the favourites to advance to the latter stages of this competition and they ended runners-up to Italy at Euro 2020. This was only the first time England had progressed beyond the semi-finals of the UEFA European Championship.
Previously, at Euro 1996, England lost to Germany in the semi-finals, 6-5 on penalties, following a 1-1 draw at Wembley Stadium. England had also claimed third-place at Euro 1968, though only four teams took part in this edition of the tournament.
Hungary, meanwhile, were one of the most dominant national teams around the mid-20th century, but unfortunately don't have any silverware to show for it. The Magyarok finished as runners-up at the 1954 FIFA World Cup, despite leading 2-0 inside the opening 10 minutes of the final versus West Germany.
The Hungarians later ended 3rd at Euro 1964, having lost out to eventual champions Spain in the semi-finals. Following the 1972 event, Hungary wouldn't feature at the European Championship finals for more than four decades until finally returning to the tournament in 2016. The Magyarok caused an upset by topping their group ahead of Portugal, but subsequently suffered a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Belgium in the Round of 16.

The first time these teams met at a major tournament was at the 1962 World Cup. The Hungarians ran out 2-1 winners though both sides would advance to the knockout phase. England lost to eventual champions Brazil in the quarter-finals, while Hungary were beaten by Czechoslovakia.
Prior to Euro 2024, Hungary and England hadn't met again at a major tournament and their clashes were limited to qualifiers, international friendlies and a couple of UEFA Nations League ties.
