Jose Feliciano Biography

Jose Montserrate Feliciano Garcia was born in September 1945 in Lares, Puerto Rica and was born blind due to congenital glaucoma. By the age of three, his love of music, and obvious prodigious talent was already abundantly clear.

At the age of five, his family moved to The Bronx in New York and by the age of seven, he had learned how to play the accordion, and by nine, he had learned the guitar. His mastery of the instrument straddled all forms of guitar playing, from flamenco guitar to classical guitar to rock and roll and jazz.

Early Influences

He has cited the likes of Ray Charles and Sam Cooke as being early influences in relation to his singing style. In 1963, he was signed to RCA Victor, and the following year; he released his debut single, Everybody Do the Click.

In 1964, he also played at the Newport Folk Festival, a companion event to the Newport Jazz Festival, and the exposure he was beginning to receive helped elevate him as a major star worldwide.

Light My Fire

In 1968, he scored his first major hit when he covered The Doors' track Light My Fire, which earned him a top-three US Billboard hit. He also released a Spanish cover of the Frank Sinatra hit Strangers in the Night. Other tracks that performed well over this initial period of his career included Hi-Heel Sneakers, And the Sun Will Shine, Marley Purt Drive and The Windmills of Your Mind. In 1970 his song Feliz Navidad proved a success.

Superstar Collaborations
