Leicester City History in the League Cup

LCFC took part in the inaugural edition of the English Football League Cup but failed to advance past the second round. Just three years later Leicester City won its first EFL Cup title, though more than 30 years passed before the Foxes eventually reclaimed the trophy.

The drought came to an end in 1997 when Leicester edged Middlesbrough in the League Cup final. Three years the East Midlands outfit became three-time winners of this tournament.

In recent years, LCFC advanced to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals five seasons out of six from 2017/18 to 2022/23.

Leicester City Top Achievements in the Carabao Cup

Only a handful of clubs have won the League Cup title more times than Leicester City. The Foxes' first title was achieved in 1964, thanks to a narrow win over Stoke City. The following year LCFC came close to defending the trophy, but failed to beat Chelsea in the final.

Leicester won the EFL Cup twice in four years from 1997-2000, sandwiching a defeat in the 1999 League Cup final. Martin O'Neill's side overcame Middlesbrough in the 1999 final but ended runners-up to Tottenham two years later. The following season Leicester became three-time League Cup winners with a 2-1 victory against Tranmere Rovers.

Of course, being three-time winners of this competition, Leicester City have enjoyed some fantastic moments in the League Cup over the years. Many of the club's supporters will remember the successes in 1997 & 2000, though only those of a certain age will be able to recall the team's maiden EFL Cup triumph in 1964.

In more recent years, LCFC have suffered a number of crushing exits in the Carabao Cup. The Foxes lost to Manchester City, on penalties, in the 2017/18 quarter-finals and the same result ensued 12 months later at the same stage. On both occasions Man City went on to clinch the title.

Likewise happened in the 2021/22 season when Leicester were beaten by eventual champions Liverpool, also via a quarter-final penalty shootout.
