This meeting of Premier League and Bundesliga outfits is very much a battle between two sides with vastly different histories in European competitions.

Manchester United are three-time winners of the European Cup/UEFA Champions League and have competed at the highest level of continental action for decades, whereas Union Berlin are relative novices in comparison.

The first taste of tangible success came to Manchester United in 1967/68 when Sir Matt Busby’s side defeated Benfica 4-1 at Wembley Stadium, with legends Sir Bobby Charlton, Brian Kidd, and George Best all netting in the final.

It took another thirty years for Manchester United to collect a second success, and that came after Sir Alex Ferguson had helped the club to end their lengthy wait for a domestic title.

In 1998/99, the Old Trafford side secured a memorable treble, completing that impressive feat by beating Bayern Munich in Barcelona, coming back from a goal down to score twice in injury time.

Nine years later, they took advantage of John Terry’s missed penalty to clinch their third top-tier title, beating Chelsea on spot-kicks in Moscow after a 1-1 draw.

Final losses to FC Barcelona followed in 2009 and 2011 before Ferguson left his position as Manchester United boss, and those who have followed him have summarily failed to make a significant impact on the UEFA Champions League.

Dutch boss Erik ten Hag secured a top-four finish in 20022/23, as well as a Carabao Cup triumph, in his first season in charge and therefore secured a return to the UEFA Champions League for 2023/24.

Union Berlin, on the other hand, will be experiencing their first ever UEFA Champions League campaign in 2023/24, and up to that point, they had only qualified for European action on three previous occasions.

In 2001/02, they failed to negotiate their way through the qualifying rounds in the UEFA Cup, and twenty years later, they took part in the newly formed Conference League, failing to get out of their group stage.

2022/23 saw an upturn in fortunes for Die Eisernen as they finished second in their group in the UEFA Europa League before then facing Dutch giants Ajax in the Knockout Play-Off Round and collecting an impressive goalless draw in Amsterdam in the first leg.

In the second leg, they outdid themselves, and goals from Robin Knoche, Josip Juranovic, and Danilho Doekhi saw them win 3-1 to clinch a place in the Round of 16. Here, they were undone by Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise 6-3 on aggregate.
