Manchester United are looking to reassert themselves in Europe after a significant period of relative mediocrity, and the visit of Italian giants Inter Milan is as good a place to start as any.

The Premier League side have been inconsistent in their UEFA Champions League efforts ever since Sir Alex Ferguson left his post as manager of Manchester United, with the Old Trafford side having just one Quarter-Final finish to show for the ten years since the Scot stepped aside.

Jose Mourinho did clinch a UEFA Europa League title in that period, but fans of the club, rightly considered one of the biggest in world football, know that they should be scaling bigger heights than those.

Inter Milan, at least as far as European action is concerned, are in a similar boat. They have three European Cup/UEFA Champions League titles up to 2023, as do Manchester United, with two of those coming in the earlier edition of the competition.

In 1964, Inter Milan beat Real Madrid 3-1 in Vienna, with the great Sandro Mazzola scoring twice in that final. The following year, they repeated the feat by beating Benfica at the San Siro, winning 1-0 thanks to a goal from Brazilian winger Jair.

It took another 45 years to win another title, that one coming against Bayern Munich in 2010 when Jose Mourinho led the club to victory thanks to a brace from Argentine striker Diego Milito.

They had lost two finals in the intervening period, and in 2022/23, they returned to the climax of the competition, only to lose to a Rodri goal that gave Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City a memorable treble.

The two teams have met in two European campaigns, the first of which came in 1998/99 in a tightly fought Quarter-Final.

In the first leg, Dwight Yorke scored twice to give Manchester United a handy 2-0 lead to take to the San Siro. In the return, Nicola Ventola came on as a sub on 59 minutes and scored four minutes later to leave the game on a knife edge.

Inter Milan had to push for that crucial equalizer, but this left them short at the back, and Paul Scholes scored an all-important goal with two minutes left to secure passage for Ferguson’s side.

In 2008/09, they were drawn together in the Round of 16, with the two teams playing out a goalless draw in Italy before Nemanja Vidic and Cristiano Ronaldo scored at Old Trafford to hand United a 2-0 aggregate win as they made their way to the next round.

The two teams have a number of shared connections with players, including Laurent Blanc, Mikael Silvestre, Juan Sebastian Veron, Romelu Lukaku, Andre Onana, Alexis Sanchez, Matteo Darmian, Ashley Young, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Diego Forlan, Alex Telles and Christian Eriksen all having done so.

Another star to play for both teams comes in the form of England midfielder Paul Ince. The combative talent was signed by Manchester United from West Ham in 1989, and he provided Ferguson with some much-needed steel in the middle of the park.

Over six seasons with United, he racked up 281 appearances and scored 28 goals, helping Manchester United to two Premier League titles, two FA Cup wins, a League Cup as well as the UEFA European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1991.

He was sold to Inter Milan in 1995 and spent two seasons with the club, playing 73 times and scoring 12 goals. He then returned to England to play for United’s arch-enemies, Liverpool, as well as Middlesbrough and Wolves, before moving into management.
