Manchester United and FC Copenhagen mark their level of success with different barometers in the UEFA Champions League. Yet, history has shown that anything can happen when these two teams meet.

The Red Devils are undoubtedly the bigger club, and their European achievements are proof of that. Man United have won three European Cup/Champions League trophies, two of them coming during Sir Alex Ferguson’s tenure. Under Jose Mourinho, United won their first Europa League title after beating Ajax in the 2017 final.

FC Copenhagen is the most decorated club in Danish football and regularly qualify for European competitions. However, their achievements in Europe are far more humble than those of Manchester United.

They’ve never won a European trophy and only once in their history did FC Copenhagen manage to progress to the knockout stages of the Champions League. In the 2010/11 season, the Danish club finished second behind FC Barcelona in their group to set up a last 16 tie with Chelsea FC. They drew 1-1 with eventual winners Barcelona in the group stage at the Parken Stadium, but were duly beaten 2-0 on aggregate by the West London club.

These two teams have been drawn together in the UEFA Champions League group stage on two occasions: 2006/07 and 2023/24. In their first ever meeting, the Red Devils dismissed FC Copenhagen with ease, winning 3-0 at Old Trafford in October 2006 thanks to goals from Paul Scholes, John O’Shea, and Kieran Richardson.

Yet, FC Copenhagen fans certainly look back fondly on a famous night for the club one month later. Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo lined up at the Parken Stadium, but could do nothing to stop a historic Marcus Allback-inspired 1-0 Copenhagen victory.

Prior to their 2023/24 Champions League encounters, Man United and FC Copenhagen’s most recent meeting came in the Europa League during the COVID-19 affected 2019/20 season. Man United and FC Copenhagen faced off in a one-legged quarter-final fixture. The Red Devils needed extra-time to down Copenhagen, with Bruno Fernandes scoring the only goal of the game from the penalty spot.

There’s only one player who has notably connected Manchester United and FC Copenhagen. In 2020, Danish striker Rasmus Hojlund broke into the Copenhagen first team at the age of 17 and quickly bagged 5 goals in 11 European games.

The youngster secured moves to Austrian club Sturm Graz and Italian outfit Atalanta. In the summer of 2023, at just 20 years old, Hojlund completed a £64m move to Manchester United.
