Middlesbrough FC Info

Middlesbrough have been fighting to get back into the Premier League ever since they were relegated in 2018. MFC had ended a seven-year wait to return to the top division, but lasted just a single campaign before relegation back to the EFL Championship.

Boro came within reach of achieving promotion in 2023, narrowly losing out to Coventry City in the Championship play-off semi-finals.

Middlesbrough FC History

Middlesbrough FC was founded in 1876, making it one of the oldest professional football clubs in the North East of England. The club turned professional in 1899, four years before it moved into Ayresome Park.

After turning professional Boro made its Football League debut in 1899, gaining entry to the Second Division. Middlesbrough earned promotion in 1902 and subsequently played top-flight football for the first time.

Middlesbrough remained in the First Division for 20 years, finishing as high as 3rd in 1914, and floated in and out of the top two tiers leading up to the 1930s. In the 1938/39 campaign, the last full season before WWII broke out, Boro finished 4th in the First Division.

MFC suffered relegation in 1954 and remained outside of the top flight for two decades.

Middlesbrough in Recent Years

Boro dropped to the Second Division in 1982, and even further down to the Third Division four years later, before clinching back-to-back promotions in 1987/88. Having instantly returned to the Second Division, Middlesbrough went back up in 1992 and thus became a founding member of the Premier League.

In 1996/97, MFC reached the finals of both domestic cups, the League Cup and the FA Cup, but ultimately lost twice at Wembley Stadium – first to Leicester City and then against Chelsea. The following year Boro once again made it to the League Cup final, but again couldn't find a way past Chelsea.

Up until that point, the furthest Boro had progressed in the EFL Cup was the semi-final stage in 1975/76 and 1991/92, losing to Manchester City and Manchester United, respectively.

At long last, a first major trophy arrived in 2004 under manager Steve McClaren and led by captain Gareth Southgate. Boro beat Bolton Wanderers in the League Cup final, 2-1, at Millennium Stadium. The Teesside outfit had overcome major Premier League sides along the way, namely Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, and Everton.

Southgate would later succeed McClaren as Boro boss when the latter was appointed England manager in 2006. The former international defender was still a Middlesbrough player at the time, transitioning from player to manager within a matter of weeks.

Following their maiden major trophy, Middlesbrough advanced to the League Cup quarter-finals multiple times before eventually going one step further to the last-four in 2023/24. Boro were drawn against Premier League side Chelsea in a two-legged semi-final tie.

Middlesbrough Rivals

Boro's main rivals are Sunderland and Newcastle United, with all three teams based in North East England. A prolonged absence from the top flight has meant that Middlesbrough and the Magpies haven't met in a Premier League fixture since 2006/07.

The Tees-Wear derby is contested between Middlesbrough and Sunderland, while the Tyne-Tees derby sees Boro and Newcastle go head-to-head.

Middlesbrough Stadium: Riverside Stadium

Riverside Stadium has been the home of Middlesbrough FC since 1995, and the ground has a 34,742 capacity. Boro had previously played their home games at Ayresome Park for almost a century, since 1903.

The Riverside Stadium became the new home of Middlesbrough following the Taylor Report of 1989/90, which recommended all top-division stadiums were to be all-seated as opposed to open terraces. The ground has hosted several international matches involving the England national team.
