Despite their popularity in England and France respectively, Newcastle United and PSG have struggled to achieve much success on the international front. They’ve won two trophies apiece, of competitions that no longer exist.
Newcastle won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1969 and beat Lillestrøm to win the Intertoto Cup in 2006.
Despite their abundances of riches, Paris Saint-Germain have won only one Cup Winners' Cup in 1996 and an Intertoto Cup in 2001. They did reach the UEFA Champions League final in the 2020/21 edition, but lost 1-0 to Bayern Munich.
PSG have enjoyed plenty of domestic success since being bought by Qatari investors in 2011. They signed some of the best players in world football and dominated Ligue 1, but are still searching for their first Champions League trophy.
Newcastle United were bought by Saudi investors in 2021 and their fortunes quickly improved under the new owners. They made some astute signings and qualified for the 2023/24 Champions League, making their first appearance in the competition for more than 20 years.
Prior to the 2023/24 season, there were no competitive meetings between Newcastle United and PSG. It’s going to be a scintillating and historic encounter when these two teams meet.
Newcastle and PSG may have little history facing off against one another, but there are plenty of familiar faces to have played for both clubs. During the Premier League era, there’s always been a large contingent of French players at Newcastle.
French wingers David Ginola and Laurent Robert became legends at St James’ Park after moving to Newcastle from PSG. Didier Domi, David Rozehnal, Alain Goma, Sylvain Distin, and Fabrice Pancrate also swapped PSG for the black and white stripes of Newcastle.
In recent years, Hatem Ben Arfa and Yohan Cabaye were stars at Newcastle, but both failed to replicate the same form after joining PSG. Dutch midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum is one more player to have featured for both clubs.
