In the 2012/13 season, Celtic did progress from a group containing FC Barcelona, SL Benfica, and Spartak Moscow. Juventus in the last 16 was one step too far, losing 5-0 on aggregate to the Italians.

There are plenty of players who have bridged the gap between these two famous clubs. Goalkeeper Fraser Forster spent six years as a Newcastle player without ever making an appearance for the club. He was loaned to Celtic for two seasons before completing a permanent move to Celtic Park in 2012.

Welsh forward Craig Bellamy moved from Newcastle to Celtic on loan in 2005 after falling out with manager Graeme Souness. Alan Thompson came through the Newcastle United youth academy before eventually becoming an integral midfielder for Celtic between 2000-2007.
