The first meeting between these teams came in the 1935 FA Cup. An eventful 3-3 draw was followed by a 2-1 win for Norwich in their Fourth Round replay at Elland Road.

It wasn't until the 1960/61 season when Norwich City and Leeds United first shared a pitch in a league fixture. Both teams were playing in the old Second Division at the time, and they each won their home fixture against one another. The two sides clashed in the top flight for the first time in September 1972, as Leeds claimed victory at home and away against Norwich.

It was around this time Leeds United were among the best teams in the First Division, winning the FA Cup and two league titles in the space of five years. Up until today the only major trophy achieved by Norwich City has been the League Cup, which the Canaries won in the 1961/62 season and once more in 1985.
