Poland World Cup History

The first time the Poland national team played at the FIFA World Cup was at the 1938 event in France.

Almost 40 years passed before the Eagles returned to the world stage in 1974, and they certainly made a significant impact on the competition in West Germany. Poland topped their group, ahead of heavyweights Argentina & Italy, but ultimately lost out to the hosts & eventual champions. The Poles did however claim the bronze medal with victory over Brazil in the third place play-off.

Poland advanced to the World Cup semi-finals in 1982 though once again fell victim to the eventual world champions, this time Italy. A 3-2 win versus France saw the Central European country earn another third-place finish at the showpiece event.

The Polish team progressed to the Round of 16 in 1986, but their next three appearances at the World Cup – in 2002, 2006 & 2018 – all resulted in group-stage exits.

At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Poland snuck through to the knockout rounds with 4 points from three group matches. A last-16 encounter against France brought an abrupt end to the tournament for the Eagles, as Robert Lewandowski netted a late consolation goal in a 3-1 defeat to France.
