Poland Rugby Union Team History

The Polish rugby union team made their international bow in 1958 when they beat East Germany, in a game they narrowly won 9-8.

They followed up that victory with a defeat against West Germany a year later.

They are currently ranked 30th in the world and are considered one of the better tier 3 nations.

They have previously been ranked as high as 26 and show the potential to push themselves upwards towards tier 2, which represents the best European teams outside those who compete in the Six Nations Championship.

They take part in the Rugby Europe International Championships as part of the Rugby Europe Trophy, in the second division.

Missed Out On World Cup Qualification

In the qualifying tournament for the last Rugby World Cup, which took place in Japan in 2019, Poland picked up impressive wins over Ukraine, Moldova, and the Netherlands but lost out to Portugal and Switzerland and therefore missed out on a place in the finals.

Current head coach, Welshman Christian Hitt, will hope to push the team in the right direction and a number of their current squad do ply their trade outside Poland, which is evidence of growth in terms of the quality of players available to him.

Poland Rugby Union National Team- Recent Results

Poland won each of their opening three fixtures in 2021. They defeated Ukraine 27-24 in Lviv in October 2021 and then edged past Germany 21-16 in Gdynia and eased by Switzerland 37-25 in Warsaw in November.

A big loss in Belgium, 41-11, was something of a blow but their only fixture of 2022 did result in a convincing 43-10 win over lowly Lithuania.

However, they were thumped by Romania 67-27 in February 2023 on their return to international action.

Their next encounters will be against Portugal and Belgium as part of their Rugby Europe Championship pool.
