Republic of Ireland vs England History

The Republic of Ireland had failed to qualify for either the FIFA World Cup or the UEFA European Championships prior to the appointment of Jack Charlton as their national team coach in 1986, and it would be fair to say that the former England World Cup winner was something of a miraculous figure. He immediately led the Boys in Green to the Euro 1988 finals, where they performed well, and then followed that up by getting Ireland to the FIFA World Cup in Italy in 1990, where his side reached the Quarter-finals, famously defeating Romania in the Round of 16 before losing to the hosts. 1994 saw the Republic of Ireland defeat Italy before reaching the Round of 16 again. They have failed to hit those heights since 2002, when Mick McCarthy’s side performed admirably.

England picked up their maiden major title by winning the FIFA World Cup in 1966, overcoming West Germany 4-2 in the final before losing to the same opposition in Mexico in 1970. Failed qualification attempts came in 1974 and 1978 and Sir Bobby Robson then did wonderfully well to take the Three Lions to the Semi-finals in 1990, only to lose out to Germany again, this time via penalties. Terry Venables suffered this same fate at Euro 1996, and the likes of Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello came up short before Gareth Southgate made a genuine impact in the national team coach role. His side reached the Semi-finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, before losing to Croatia and then got to the finals of both Euro 2020 and 2024, suffering defeats to Italy and Spain, respectively, before calling it quits.

Republic of Ireland vs England Head-to-Head

The first time these two nations met in a competitive finals match came at the Euro 88 finals in Germany. Ireland came out on top, with Ray Houghton netting a famous winner in Stuttgart, though both teams failed to make it out of the group phase on that occasion. They once again met in the 1990 FIFA World Cup group stage; this time, a Gary Lineker goal put England ahead before Kevin Sheedy leveled for the Irish in Cagliari. More recently, the two teams faced off at Wembley in a 2020 friendly, with goals from Harry Maguire, Jadon Sancho and Dominic Calvert-Lewin completing a comfortable 3-0 home win for England.
