Romania vs Scotland History
Despite being one of the oldest national teams in the world, Scotland only featured in the finals of the UEFA European Championship for the first time in 1992. The Scots were eliminated at the group stage and did likewise four years later in England. More recently, at Euro 2020, Scotland ended bottom of their group with zero wins from three games versus England, Croatia and the Czech Republic.
Romania made its Euro debut at the 1984 edition, but exited the competition winless. The same happened at Euro 1996 as the Tricolorii suffered defeats to France, Bulgaria and Spain. At the following edition Romania advanced to the knockouts for the first time, courtesy of a last-gasp victory over England in their group. Ultimately though, Romania would lose to Italy in the quarter-finals.
The Romanians crashed out of the group stage, winless, at Euro 2008 as well as Euro 2016. They would only return to the tournament finals in 2024.
Romania vs Scotland Head-to-Head
Prior to Euro 2024 these teams had never clashed at a major tournament, with all of their previous encounters either qualifiers or international friendlies.
When Scotland faced Romania in Euro 1992 qualifiers, Ally McCoist scored the winner in a 2-1 triumph for the Scottish at Hampden Park. The reverse fixture ended 1-0 in favour of Romania, thanks to Gheorghe Hagi's second-half penalty.
