Romania vs Ukraine History

Romania first appeared at the European Championship finals in 1984, but ended bottom of their group having registered a draw and two losses against Spain, West Germany and Portugal. Romania have since featured only semi-regularly at the tournament and have mostly succumbed to group-stage exits.

The Tricolorii reached the quarter-finals at Euro 2000, thanks to a stunning upset versus favourites England. The eastern Europeans ran out 3-2 winners in their final group game to advance to the knockouts for the first time, at the expense of the Three Lions. The dream ended in a 2-0 defeat to eventual finalists Italy, with Francesco Totti and Filippo Inzaghi on the scoresheet.

Ukraine featured at the continental showpiece for the first time in 2012, but didn't need to qualify due to being one of the host nations, together with Poland. The Blue and Yellow won their opening game versus Sweden, 2-1, thanks to two goals from Andriy Shevchenko in front of around 65,000 spectators at the Olympic Stadium in Kyiv. Ukraine, though, failed to progress from the group following losses to England and France.

Euro 2016 wasn't any better for the Ukrainians as they failed to score in any of their three group games and once again exited at the first round. The belated 2020 edition was far more successful for The Blue and Yellow, with Shevchenko now as head coach of the national team. Ukraine reached the knockout stage for the first time, advancing as one of the best-ranked third-place teams, and went on to overcome Sweden in the Round of 16 courtesy of Artem Dovbyk's winner in extra-time. Ukraine subsequently suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to England in the quarter-finals.

Romania vs Ukraine Head-to-Head

The teams have met on a number of occasions, though predominantly in friendly fixtures. They faced one another in the build-up to the Euro 2016 finals, as Ukraine prevailed in a seven-goal thriller. Oleksandr Zinchenko and Andriy Yarmolenko were on target in a 4-3 win for The Blue and Yellow.
