Lazio vs Roma History

SS Lazio was founded in January 1900, making it one of the oldest football clubs in Italy. In 1927, the club resisted the attempts of the Fascist regime to unify all Roman teams into one club. This merger became known as AS Roma.

The first on-field meeting between these teams came in December 1929, during the first league campaign following the reconfiguration of the Italian top flight. Lazio failed to beat Roma in each of their first six clashes, and finally scored victory over their local foes in October 1932.

Both the Biancocelesti and Giallorossi are streets behind the most successful teams in Serie A. They have won five Scudetti between them – two for Lazio and three for Roma – as of 2024. Lazio hoisted the Coppa Italia for a seventh time in 2019, a decade after their arch-rivals had captured this trophy for a ninth time.

Neither of these Roman clubs have posed much of a threat in European competition, particularly in recent years. Roma did however claim UEFA Conference League honours in 2022.

Rome Derby Stats and Mutual Connections

No player has scored more goals in the Derby della Capitale than Roma hero Francesco Totti. The ex-Italy striker netted 11 times against Lazio, despite featuring a total 44 times in the Rome derby.

The following players have been on both sides of this fierce derby:

• Siniša Mihajlović signed for Lazio in 1998, having previously spent two seasons at Roma earlier in the 90s. The ex-Yugoslavia defender made almost 200 appearances for the Biancocelesti and he became a Serie A champion in the 1999/00 campaign.

• Angelo Peruzzi was in the Roma Academy from an early age, though he wasn't afforded a fortune of opportunities to run out for the senior team. The Italy goalkeeper joined Juventus and went on to amass more than 300 appearances for the Bianconeri. Peruzzi switched from Inter Milan to Lazio in 2000, and spent the final seven years of his career back in the Italian capital.

• Former Spain winger Pedro spent the 2020/21 season with Roma following successful spells at FC Barcelona and Chelsea. He controversially crossed the Rome divide in the summer of 2021 when he completed a free transfer to Lazio.

Lazio vs Roma Head-to-Head

There have been more than 180 (competitive) editions of the Rome derby, with some titanic battles taking place at the magestic Stadio Olimpico over the years.

Lazio won 2-1 in this fixture during the 1999/00 season as the Biancocelesti closed in on the Scudetto, winning Serie A for only the second time. Pavel Nedved and Juan Sebastián Verón scored in quick succession after Vincenzo Montella had given Roma the lead inside the opening five minutes.

Roma ran out 4-1 winners in the Rome derby of April 2016. The The Giallorossi established a two-goal cushion through Stephan El Shaarawy and Edin Džeko. Marco Parolo halved the deficit but to no avail, as Alessandro Florenzi and Diego Perotti both found the net in the closing stages to earn Roma a precious victory at the expense of their bitter rivals.

Lazio claimed a 3-0 win over Roma in March 2019 and again by the same scoreline in early 2021. Ciro Immobile was on the scoresheet on both occasions.
