There are a few stadiums in Europe that are inextricably linked to the European Cup, and indeed the UEFA Champions League, playing host to key matches, including memorable finals, and one such venue would have to be Rome’s Stadio Olimpico.

As of 2023, the famous stadium, in the heart of the Eternal City, has hosted four finals, the first of which came in 1977, when Liverpool collected their first European Cup crown, beating Borussia Monchengladbach 3-1.

In 1984 the Stadio Olimpico was named as the host of the European Cup, and it just so happened that AS Roma, who share the ground with Lazio, qualified for the final, only to lose on penalties on their own patch.

1996 saw the stadium host another final, with Italian side Juventus beating Ajax on penalties after a 1-1 draw. 2009 saw FC Barcelona put on a masterclass to defeat Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United 2-0.

Lazio haven’t got all that close to finding themselves in a top-tier European final; the best they have managed to date is a Quarter-Final finish in their first appearance in the competition, with Sven-Goran Eriksson’s side aiding their efforts in 1999/2000.

Since that occasion, they’ve only once gotten back to the knockout phase, doing so in 2020/21, where they were beaten 6-2 on aggregate by Bayern Munich in the Round of 16.

FC Porto, on the other hand, are two-time winners of the competition. Their first success came in 1987 when they surprised the footballing world by coming back from a goal down to defeat Bayern Munich in Vienna.

Their second triumph came during Jose Mourinho’s hugely successful stint in charge of the Estadio do Dragao side. FC Porto had won the UEFA Cup in 2002/03 and were very much on a roll, and their Round of 16 win over Manchester United was something of a touchstone moment for the Portuguese side that season.

They won the final by thumping AS Monaco 3-0 in Gelsenkirchen, with goals coming from Carlos Alberto, Deco, and Dmitri Alenichev. They have never hit those heights since, though a number of Quarter-Final exits have occurred in more recent seasons.

These two sides have met in Europe on two occasions, the first coming in the UEFA Cup Semi-Finals in 2002/03. Jose Mourinho’s side secured a commanding lead from the first leg, winning 4-1 after going one goal down early on.

The second leg finished goalless, and that meant FC Porto were through to face Celtic in the UEFA Cup Final, which they duly won 3-2 in extra-time.

They met again almost twenty years later, this time in the UEFA Europa League in the Knockout round play-offs, with FC Porto winning the home leg 2-1 and the second leg ending 2-2, completing a 4-3 aggregate win for the Dragões.
