TLC History

TLC were formed in 1990 when a record producer in Atlanta set about putting together an edgy girl group and the trio was made up of Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas.

The group's management wanted to form a band which mixed hip hop and new jack swing and it was not long until TLC were ruling the airwaves.

Their debut single was released in 1991, and Ain't 2 Proud to Beg proved a huge hit, breaking into the US Billboard Top Ten. It was followed up by Baby-Baby-Baby, What About Your Friends and Hat 2 da Back, all of which appeared on the band's debut album.

Ooooh... On the TLC Tip sold four and a half million copies in the United States and put the girls on the map. The follow-up, CrazySexyCool, was an even bigger success, selling over 15 million copies worldwide.

The album included two US number-one singles, Creep and Waterfalls, the latter being an undisputed classic of the era that spent seven weeks at the top of the charts. Their unbelievable success continued with their third album, FanMail, selling ten million copies and including the iconic number-one song No Scrubs and Unpretty.

TLC's musical career was unrivalled. Their three debut records were all multi-platinum albums, and they had become giants of the hip-hop scene. Sadly, in April 2002, Lisa Left Eye Lopes was killed in a car crash in Honduras, and the band posthumously released their fourth studio album, 3D, in October of the same year.

They took time off from appearing on stage but did make an appearance at the 2008 BET Awards, where they performed with En Vogue and SWV.

Unsurprisingly the band took a long break from releasing new material until the release of their fifth studio album in 2017. The self-titled album proved a hit with critics and saw the band team up with legends like Snoop Dogg.

The band has secured numerous accolades over the course of their lengthy history, and their CrazySexyCool is known as the best-selling album of all time by an all-girl group. TLC have won four Grammy Awards, a host of MTV Video Music Awards, and an American Music Award in 2000.

In 2013 VH1 premiered a biographical film titled CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story, starring Keke Palmer, further evidencing the stature of the hip-hop group. TLC also became the first R&B group to secure a million sales in Japan for their FanMail album in 1999.
