About USA vs Chile Copa America 2024 Tickets

Having first been contested in 1916, the Copa America is a far older competition than both the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Championships, and in its initial format, the South American Football Championship, as it was then known, involved just four nations.

The competition has gone through various expansions and time-frames, with moves from eight teams in 1947 to ten entrants in 1975. As of 1993 the Copa America has moved to 12 teams, adding two nations from CONCACAF (North and Central America), and on occasion, this has even been expanded to 16, with the likes of Japan and Qatar having previously been invited to join the fun.

As a spectacle, the event attracts football-mad fans from all over the world, eager to experience the incredible atmosphere, flamboyant culture, and high-quality football; indeed, many supporters look to double up a trip to see the Copa America with a holiday to make the most of what the host nation has to offer.

Supporters seeking out tickets may elect to see what they can secure from the CONMEBOL ticketing area, but in all honesty, the best shot at getting tickets to any game in the competition is via SeatPick.

USA vs Chile Copa America Tournament Record

In 1993, as part of Copa America’s ongoing expansion, the United States was one of two CONCACAF sides invited to join the tournament (along with Mexico), and many expected Bora Milutinovic’s side to make an impact at the finals in Ecuador, but it didn’t work out that way.

They opened their account with a defeat to Uruguay and then lost to hosts Ecuador but looked to be salvaging some pride with a win in their final game, going three goals up against Venezuela. However, they then conceded three times in the second half to secure a point and thus finish bottom of the table.

Two years later, the United States returned to the tournament and put on a much better fist of it, defeating Chile and Argentina in the group phase before knocking out Mexico in the Quarter-Finals to set up a Semi-Final with Brazil.

They fought well against the favourites but were edged out by an Aldair goal that saw Brazil through to the final, which they lost to Uruguay on penalties.

2007 was an instantly forgettable experience for the Americans as Bob Bradley’s side lost all their group games to finish rock bottom of their group.

2016 saw the United States become the first non-South American nation to host the tournament, and they did so as part of the centenary celebration event, which they greatly impressed at.

They topped their group before defeating Ecuador in the Quarter-Finals with former Tottenham and Fulham attacker Clint Dempsey netting before they were eased out of the competition by Argentina, who beat them 4-0 in a very one-sided Semi-Final, with former Real Madrid and one-time Chelsea man Gonzalo Higuain scoring twice.

Chile took part in the inaugural Copa America but failed to secure their first solitary win in the competition until 1926, a full decade since their opening game in the tournament.

In 1955 and 1956, they finished as runners-up, a fate they replicated in 1979 and 1987. In 2015, La Roja earned their first-ever title, and they did so on home soil. Jorge Sampaoli’s impressive squad for that tournament included Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez, midfield stalwart Arturo Vidal, and bruiser Gary Medel, and both players played a key role in their maiden success.

Wins over Ecuador and Bolivia sandwiched a 3-3 draw with Mexico before Chile knocked out Uruguay in the Quarter-Finals. Eduardo Vargas scored twice in a Semi-Final win over Peru, which set up a Copa America Final against Argentina.

The game ended goalless before Chile took home the big prize after penalties in Santiago.

A year later, Copa America came early to mark the centenary, and the nucleus of the same squad, now coached by Juan Antonio Pizzi, set about making it back-to-back successes.

Vargas netted four in a 7-0 humiliation of Mexico in the Quarter-Finals, and in the Semi-Finals, they eased past Colombia to set up another final against Argentina. Once again, the tie finished goalless, and once again, Chile came out winners after penalties, this time in front of a packed MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

In 2019, Chile finished in fourth place and had to settle for a Quarter-Final exit in 2021.

USA vs Chile Head-to-Head

The United States and Chile have faced each other in one previous Copa America campaign and that came in 1995.

That clash came in the group phase of the competition, with Eric Wynalda scoring twice for the US and Sebastian Rozental scoring Chile’s only response in a 2-1 American victory.

Chile would go on to be knocked out of the competition by finishing bottom of the group while the United States topped it.
