The United States first took part in the Copa America in 1993 when, along with Mexico, they were invited to join. While the Mexicans made it all the way to the final on that occasion, the US were felled at the first hurdle.
They managed just one point from their three group games and took the first flight home. In 1953, Los Guaraníes won the tournament for the first time, beating Brazil in the final play-off 3-2 in Lima. They repeated this feat in 1979 but have struggled to get close to winning a third-ever Copa America title, with their performance in 2011 proving their closest-ever attempt to do so.
For that tournament, they were coached by Gerardo Martino, who went on to manage Argentina and FC Barcelona, and their squad included stars such as Roque Santa Cruz, Lucas Barrios, and Cristian Riveros.
Paraguay drew all three of their group-stage games and then beat Brazil in the Quarter-Finals after all four of their penalty-takers failed to convert their spot-kicks in La Plata.
