The Copa America has been running for over a century, which makes it one of the longest-running international football tournaments ever, longer than the likes of the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Championship.
Only four nations entered the inaugural tournament in 1916, and that number doubled by 1947, and in 1975, ten South American entrants took part. As part of the effort to bring further exposure to the competition, non-South American sides were first invited to join in 1993.
This meant that two sides from CONCACAF (North and Central America) were added to the mix, and this has proven very successful, especially if the national teams involved have been Mexico and the United States, which clearly helps to boost the level of interest.
The Copa America attracts interest from fans all over the world, all of whom are keen to experience the astounding atmosphere that is generated at the tournament as well as the high standard of football that takes place. The United States competed in their first Copa America in 1993 but failed to get out of their group, registering just one point from their three games.
Two years later, in 1995, they performed far better. Indeed, they made it all the way to the Semi-Finals of the competition in Uruguay, only to meet a stern test in the shape of Brazil, with Aldair scoring the only goal of a 1-0 win that saw the US have to settle for a place in the third-place playoff, which they duly lost 4-1 with former Newcastle United star Faustino Asprilla among the scorers for Colombia.
Another group stage exit came in 2007, but in 2016, the centenary event hosted in the US, they once again made it to the last four, only to be thumped 4-0 by Argentina. They once again met Colombia in the third-place match, and this time, the game was closer, albeit the Colombians still triumphed, with former AC Milan forward Carlos Bacca scoring the game’s only goal.
On the whole, you could describe Bolivia’s form in the Copa America as fairly poor. La Verde first appeared in the competition in 1926, and they then went on to appear in five finals without winning a single game. This run ended in 1949 when they finished fourth in Brazil.
1963 saw Bolivia win the Copa America for the first time, doing so in front of their home fans by topping the final group, with the event not having a knockout phase at this juncture.
In 1997, they reached their second final, having once again made the most of being the hosts for the tournament.
Bolivia had beaten Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela to top their group before edging out Colombia and Mexico to set up a Copa America Final against Brazil in La Paz. Erwin Sanchez leveled for the hosts to make it 1-1 after 45 minutes before legendary forward Ronaldo restored the lead for Brazil, and Ze Roberto completed a 3-1 success.
Between 1999 and 2021, Bolivia have been perhaps the worst side in the competition, managing just one solitary win in nine tournaments, being knocked out of the tournament in the group stage in eight of those campaigns.
The USMNT have only played Bolivia in one previous Copa America tie, and that came in 1995 in the tournament hosted by Uruguay.
On that occasion, Bolivian national treasure Marco Etcheverry scored the only goal of the game, a result that led to both nations making it out of Group C, albeit Bolivia would then fall to Uruguay in the Quarter-Finals while the US soldiered on to the Semi-Finals.
