As of now, no national team has won the Copa America more than Argentina, but that does not mean they haven’t experienced long periods without success, and indeed, they have endured very lengthy droughts and a great deal of heartache among the 15 titles they have collected.
Between their first title, in 1921, and their triumph in 1959, Argentina won the Copa America no less than 12 times, as well as finishing as runners-up on five other occasions. They truly dominated the competition in this period.
It would take another 32 years to win it again, and their successes in 1991 and 1993 came due to a very strong squad available to head coach Alfio Basile.
The players he could call upon for these back-to-back successes included Diego Simeone, who would go on to manage Atletico Madrid to great effect, Serie A goal machine Gabriel Batistuta, classy attacker Claudio Caniggia and stalwart keeper Sergio Goycochea.
Over the space of those two tournaments, Argentina played thirteen games, winning eight and drawing five, topping the group format in 1991 and beating Mexico in the Copa America Final in Colombia in 1993.
There then followed another period of relative failure when Argentina would incredibly lose four Copa America finals in the space of twelve years, three of which came via the agony of failed penalty shoot-outs.
That run finally came to an end in 2021 when Lionel Messi led Lionel Scaloni’s side past arch-rivals Brazil in Rio to pick up yet another Copa America crown, 28 years since their last.
On the subject of Argentina’s Copa America heartache, the Chilean national team has certainly been guilty of being to blame for such agony.
Chile took part in the very first Copa America in 1916, but La Roja didn’t win the tournament for the first time until 99 years later. That came after finishing as runners-up on four occasions.
Their success in 2015 was a rather spectacular one, not least because it came on home soil, with Chile hosting the tournament for the first time since 1955.
A strong Chile squad including the likes of former Arsenal man Alexis Sanchez and midfield stars like Arturo Vidal and Gary Medel, eased through the group stage before beating Uruguay and Peru to set up a final with favourites Argentina.
The Copa America Final finished goalless, and then Argentina imploded in the penalty shoot-out with both Gonzalo Higuain and Ever Banega failing to convert, handing the win to Chile.
Then, just a year later, Chile once again reached the final, this time in the celebratory Copa America Centenario, where they faced off with Argentina again. Incredibly history repeated itself.
The game, played out in front of over 80,000 fans at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, ended 0-0, and then both Lionel Messi and Lucas Biglia failed to score their penalties, and Chile eased to another success over their South American rivals.
The quality of this generation of Chilean talent was clear to see. In 100 years of playing in the Copa America, they had managed to secure their only two titles within the space of little over a year.
Argentina and Chile have played each other on numerous occasions in the Copa America, and the two finals outlined earlier go some way to showing how the key games have played out in more recent years.
In 2019 the two sides played in the third-place playoff in Sao Paulo, and on that occasion, Argentina triumphed 2-1, with Juventus and AS Roma forward Paulo Dybala and Sergio Aguero scoring for the victors.
At Copa America 2021, they drew 1-1 in Rio during the group phase of the tournament, with Lionel Messi opening the scoring before Eduardo Vargas leveled for Chile, with both sides going on to reach the knockout phase.
