Argentina vs Bolivia Copa America Tournament Record
Argentina finished as runners-up in each of the first three Copa America tournaments, which was originally run as an annual endeavour. They won their first title in 1921 and followed that success up with eight more successes by 1947.
In fact, their dominance in the competition was such that between 1923 and 1947, they either won or finished as runners-up on every occasion that they were involved.
Between 1959 and 1991, they experienced a real drought, which came to an end in Chile when Fiorentina legend Gabriel Batistuta led from the front to finish as top scorer in the 1991 edition when Alfio Basile’s side clinched that long-awaited title ahead of Brazil.
They retained the title two years later when Batistuta scored twice in a 2-1 Copa America Final win over Mexico in Guayaquil.
This led to another long, lean period that saw Argentina without a Copa America success for 28 years, during which time they lost four finals.
Indeed, it did look as if Lionel Messi, the Barcelona legend, would go his lengthy career without winning the Copa America, but in 2021, he played a key role in Argentina’s 15th success, with Angel Di Maria scoring the winner in a 1-0 victory over Brazil.
Bolivia’s first appearance at Copa America came in 1926, and La Verde would have to wait until 1949 to secure their first victory.
In 1963, Bolivia won the tournament for the first time and did so as the host nation, securing five wins and a draw in the Final Round. In 1997 they once again made a real run at winning Copa America again, once again making the most of home advantage.
They topped their group, having beaten Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela before dumping out Colombia and Mexico in the knockout phase to set up a final with Brazil in La Paz.
This proved a bridge too far, and though the scores were level at half-time, goals from Barcelona and Real Madrid legend Ronaldo and versatile former Bayern Munich man Ze Roberto saw Brazil to a 3-1 victory.
Between 1999 and 2021, Bolivia managed just one win across nine Copa America tournaments, and they could now be considered one of the weaker competing nations.

Argentina and Bolivia have faced each other in many Copa America matches, usually with the Argentines ending up on the winning side.
In 2016, goals from former Tottenham man Erik Lamela, Ezequiel Lavezzi, and Victor Cuesta gave Argentina a 3-0 group-stage win over Bolivia in Seattle.
