Brazil vs Chile Copa America Tournament Record

Brazil were part of the inaugural Copa America in 1916 and won the tournament for the first time in 1919. It would be fair to say that the Brazilian national team had something of a patchy record up until winning the tournament for a third time in 1949, and they then went an astonishing 40 years without success.

Their triumph, on home soil, in 1989 was brought to an end after Brazil won all three of their games in the final round stage. Goals from stars Bebeto and Romario saw them past Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay without conceding a single goal.

Chile were one of the original four nations to compete for the Copa America in 1916 but had to wait 99 years to finally lift the famous trophy. That came after finishing as runners-up on four occasions, and the drought ended in 2015 when La Roja also hosted the tournament.

Jorge Sampaoli’s side included some top talents, including former Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez and midfield talents like Arturo Vidal and Gary Medel, and they overcame Argentina in the final in Santiago, winning on penalties after a 0-0 draw.

Incredibly, having waited 99 years to win their first Copa America, they had to wait just 12 months to win another, when they once again beat Argentina in the final, this time in the United States and once again via penalties.
