These two sides have met a number of times in both at international friendly matches and competitive action. The last time they faced each other, England ran out 3-0 winners at Wembley Stadium back in November 2018.

England are becoming far more effective in major tournaments. They got to the semi-finals of the last World Cup and came within a penalty kick of being crowned European Champions, but lost out to Italy last year.

This time around, it would not be unthinkable for England to end the tournament as the victorious squad, especially when you consider the sheer weight of great talents in Southgate's squad. The men's team will look to take heart from the England women, who won the European Championships earlier this year.

England are among the favourites to win the World Cup (behind reigning World Cup holders France, Brazil, Argentina and Spain, though ahead of the likes of Germany and Belgium), while the United States, whose fans will no doubt indulge in calling the game soccer, are looking to make an impact, having missed out on the 2018 finals in Russia.

The first meeting between the two nations came back in June 1950 at the World Cup finals, when the United States shocked the footballing world by beating England 1-0 in Uruguay.
