England National Team History

Though it's been an age since England won a major tournament, and in case you need reminding, that once-in-a-lifetime event occurred way back in 1966, that doesn't mean that the Three Lions haven't covered themselves in glory from time to time.

1966 And All That

That famous World Cup title, their only one to date, came when England won on home soil, defeating West Germany 4-2 at Wembley Stadium in the summer of 1966.

Since then, every attempt to secure silverware at international level has been measured against that yardstick.

In 1970 the nucleus of that successful 66 side battled hard in Mexico, but, this time, lost to West Germany in the knockout stage, and they then failed to qualify for a World Cup tournament in both 1974 and 1978.

Hand of God

1982 saw an in-form England team ease into the second group stage before faltering, and in 1986 they lost out famously to Diego Maradona in the quarter-finals, where the Argentine magician bagged two goals, one which involved the diminutive attacker getting past a host of England players and the other coming via the Hand of God.

1990 was definitely a return to form, and the World Cup in Italy is still one that is held in high regard by fans who traveled to Italy to see the drama unfold. West Germany, on this occasion, defeated England in the semi-finals after penalties.

Knockout Blows

1994 saw another failed qualification attempt under Graham Taylor, and 1998, 2002, 2006, and 2010 all resulted in knockout elimination, with 2014 ending in group stage implosion.

Under national team manager Gareth Southgate, things improved a great deal, with the former player proving a very adept man manager, getting the most of his squads in competitive action.

Genuine Contenders

In 2018 they fell in the semi-finals to Croatia and followed that up by reaching the final of the delayed Euro 2020, where Italy were victorious.

In 2022 England were legitimately thought of as one of the favourites for the World Cup in Qatar, but after a successful initial spell, they limped out to France in the quarter-finals.

At Euro 2024, England started slowly but improved as the tournament went on, culminating in a 2-1 victory over Netherlands in the semi-finals. Spain proved too good in the final, winning 2-1 despite a Cole Palmer goal.

In October 2024, after a brief spell with Lee Carsley in charge, England appointed former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel.
