FC Barcelona and Shakhtar Donetsk were drawn together in the 2023/24 Champions League group stage, setting up their first competitive meeting in over 12 years. Their last encounter was the 2010/11 Champions League quarter-finals. Barcelona thrashed the Ukrainian outfit 5-1 in the first leg at the Camp Nou, and Leo Messi scored the only goal of the game in the second-leg to secure their berth in the semi-final.

Yet, Shakhtar can look back on some positive results against Barcelona. They beat the Catalan side 3-2 at the Camp Nou in the 2008/09 Champions League group stage, and also won 2-0 in 2004, when Barca fielded a teenage Messi in Ukraine.
