FC Barcelona are rightly considered one of the best teams in Europe, but it would be fair to say that following their fifth title, which came in 2015, they have somewhat flattered to deceive in the UEFA Champions League, certainly by their own very high standards.

The Catalan giants have secured the lion’s share of their triumphs in the competition since the rebranding of the European Cup to its current UEFA Champions League format.

The one exception being the 1992 success over Sampdoria, secured via the cultured boot of Ronald Koeman, the Dutch master’s excellent free-kick securing an extra-time win at Wembley Stadium.

Four wins between 2006 and 2015 is an indication as to how dominant a force Barcelona had become, and Lionel Messi played an integral part in three of those successes whilst also winning a medal for the first, albeit not featuring in the final in Paris, where they edged past Arsenal.

2009 and 2011 were masterminded by Pep Guardiola, who put Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United in their place in both the Rome and Wembley finals. 2015 came via Luis Enrique, following a comfortable 3-1 win over Juventus, with the club’s front-line of Messi, Neymar, and Luis Suarez arguably one of the best ever assembled in the game.

Newcastle United, in comparison, are novices in the competition. Their first campaign came in 1997/98, where they did well to get through to the second group stage before they were eliminated. In 2002/03, they achieved much the same result, and the following year, they stumbled in the Third Qualifying Round.

That meant that their 2023/24 qualification was their first in over twenty years, and the club is now very well-backed financially and will, therefore, be looking to make a more sustained impact on the competition.

These two teams have met in two different European campaigns, the first coming in the group phase of the 1997/98 tournament. On that occasion, Colombian legend Faustino Asprilla netted a superb hat-trick to complete a famous 3-2 win. In the return fixture, a goal from defender Michael Reiziger gave Barcelona a narrow win, and the Toon Army were knocked out.

In 2002/03, they met again, this time in the second group phase, and Barcelona won both encounters, 3-1 at the Camp Nou and 2-0 at St James’ Park.

There are, unsurprisingly, only a few individuals who have made respective impacts at both Barcelona and Newcastle United. These include Patrick Kluivert and manager Sir Bobby Robson.

The former England national team coach was a hugely respected individual at both clubs. He spent one season in charge at FC Barcelona in 1996/97, during which he secured a trio of cup successes before he moved to a general manager role, which he left a year later to take over at Dutch side PSV Eindhoven.

In September 1999, he took charge of Newcastle United, his boyhood club, and was at the helm for five years before he left in 2004. He sadly passed away five years later but remains a much-loved figure at St James’ Park.
